Baby Born on VR Train Between Helsinki and Vaasa
A baby was born on a VR intercity train traveling from Helsinki to Vaasa on Tuesday evening, marking an exceptionally rare event in Finnish rail history. The birth took place on IC 49, with the train continuing largely on schedule after the incident.
VR Communications Manager Tiina Nummenmaa described the event as "exceptional and, of course, joyful," extending warm congratulations to the family. She confirmed that there are no known records of a previous birth occurring on a VR service (Yle). Iltalehti reports that VR staff followed established procedures for sudden health emergencies, working closely with emergency services to ensure a smooth response.
An ambulance was called to Seinäjoki station, where the parent and newborn were transferred for further care. According to Ilta-Sanomat (as cited by Yle), a fellow passenger assisted the mother during the birth. Despite the unusual circumstances, the train’s journey was not significantly delayed.
VR has not disclosed details about the exact time, carriage, or the health condition of the parent and child, citing privacy reasons. Nummenmaa noted that such incidents are extremely rare, stating that VR is unaware of any similar cases in recent years (Iltalehti). She also emphasized that VR staff are trained to handle various emergency situations, ensuring passenger safety in unexpected events.
The rail operator confirmed that the crew managed the situation calmly and professionally, allowing the train to proceed without major disruptions.
