Baby Born on VR Train During Journey from Helsinki to Vaasa
A baby was born on a VR intercity train traveling from Helsinki to Vaasa on Tuesday, marking a rare and joyous event for the rail operator. The birth took place on IC 49, with the mother and newborn later transferred to an ambulance at Seinäjoki station for further medical care.
VR’s Head of Communications, Tiina Nummenmaa, confirmed the incident, describing it as an "unusual situation" and a "wonderful piece of news in every way." She added that the company warmly congratulates the family on the special moment (Ilta-Sanomat). Helsingin Sanomat (HS) reports that while VR has no definitive records of previous births on its trains, this may be the first such case in the company’s history.
According to Ilta-Sanomat, at least one fellow passenger assisted the woman during the birth. VR staff followed established procedures for medical emergencies, coordinating with emergency services to ensure a smooth response. Nummenmaa stated that train personnel handled the situation calmly and professionally, working closely with healthcare professionals. An ambulance was summoned to Seinäjoki station, where the mother and baby were transferred for further care.
Despite the unexpected event, the train’s journey continued largely as scheduled, with no significant delays reported (Ilta-Sanomat). Nummenmaa noted that while births on trains are extremely rare, VR has clear protocols in place for sudden health situations. She added that, to the company’s knowledge, no similar cases have occurred in recent years (HS).
