Rare Partial Solar Eclipse Visible Across Finland

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across Finland this evening, offering a rare celestial spectacle as the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. While a total eclipse will occur in parts of Europe—including eastern Greenland, western Iceland, and northern Spain—Finnish observers will see up to 84% of the Sun obscured, depending on their location.

Best Viewing Conditions in Northern and Western Finland

The eclipse will reach its peak shortly before 9:00 PM, with the deepest coverage expected in western and northern regions. According to the Astronomical Association Ursa, the phenomenon will begin in Oulu at 19:52 and in Helsinki at 20:00. The maximum eclipse will occur at 20:45 in Oulu (84% coverage) and at 20:50 in Helsinki (83%). However, in southern and eastern Finland, the Sun will set before the eclipse concludes, limiting visibility in those areas.

Kilpisjärvi will experience the greatest coverage, while the easternmost parts of Finland will see the least. Ursa notes that solar eclipses occur when the Moon aligns with the Sun from Earth’s perspective, creating a shadow on the planet’s surface (MTV Uutiset).

Safety Precautions for Observers

Experts warn that the eclipse must not be viewed with the naked eye, binoculars, sunglasses, or unfiltered telescopes, as this can cause severe eye damage. Safe viewing methods include certified eclipse glasses or welder’s glass with a shade rating of 14 (Ilta-Sanomat).

Weather and Live Coverage

Weather conditions may affect visibility, with clearer skies expected in Oulu compared to Helsinki. Ilta-Sanomat will broadcast live footage of the eclipse from 19:45 to 21:15, featuring views from Nallikari in Oulu and Kaivopuisto in Helsinki.

A Rare Event with Long Waits for the Next

Total solar eclipses are exceptionally rare in any given location, occurring on average once every 400 years (MTV Uutiset). Finland last experienced a total eclipse in July 1990, and the next one will not be visible until October 2126. The most recent partial eclipse was observed in March 2025.

Following the eclipse, stargazers can enjoy the Perseid meteor shower, which will peak overnight. Ilta-Sanomat invites the public to share photos or videos of the event via WhatsApp.
