Turku Homicide Investigation Concludes, Two Suspects Face Possible Charges
The preliminary investigation into the fatal stabbing of a 33-year-old man in Turku’s Lauste district in April has been completed, with police forwarding the case to prosecutors for consideration of charges. Two suspects—a 44-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman—remain under suspicion, with one still in custody.
The incident occurred on 21 April when police were alerted to a disturbance at an apartment building on Pormestarinkatu. Officers arrived to find the victim, who had sustained multiple stab wounds, lying lifeless in the building’s courtyard. Despite resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene (Iltalehti).
According to the Southwest Finland Police Department, the suspects and the victim knew each other prior to the attack. The confrontation began inside an apartment, where an argument escalated into violence. The suspects allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times with a knife, while the victim also injured one of the suspects during the struggle. After the attack, the suspects moved the victim outside to the building’s entrance before fleeing (Yle).
Detective Chief Inspector Samuli Lempiäinen stated that the victim’s visit to the apartment appeared to be linked to debts, negotiations over them, or debt collection. Iltalehti reports that the suspects are a couple, with the 44-year-old man residing in the apartment where the altercation took place.
Police initially detained four individuals but released two as the investigation progressed. The remaining suspects were remanded in custody the following week by the District Court of Southwest Finland (Iltalehti). The case will now proceed to the prosecutor’s office for a decision on formal charges.
