Cold Snap Brings Frost to Finland Before Weekend Warm-Up
A seasonal cold spell is set to affect Finland in the coming days, bringing frost to parts of the country before temperatures rise again by the weekend. Ilta-Sanomat (IS) reports that cold air will dominate, with nighttime temperatures dropping to between zero and ten degrees nationwide. In northern Finland, temperatures may fall slightly below freezing, particularly in low-lying areas.
Foreca meteorologist Joanna Rinne (IS) states that ground frost is likely in the north and cannot be ruled out in central Finland. While earlier forecasts suggested sleet in Lapland’s Arm region, Rinne notes that this remains possible, particularly around the Saana fell and Kilpisjärvi area, though Wednesday’s updates no longer indicated it.
Thursday is expected to be dry, with Yle reporting high pressure keeping conditions stable. Daytime temperatures will range from 15–20 degrees in southern and central Finland, while Lapland will see cooler highs of 11–16 degrees. Yle adds that the east and parts of the north will enjoy sunny weather, though cloud cover will increase in the south and west.
Friday night will bring another cold spell, especially in the north, where temperatures may dip below freezing (IS). Yle notes that Friday will be mostly cloudy, with scattered showers in the west and north. Southern Finland will remain relatively warm, with temperatures nearing heatwave levels, while the north hovers around 15 degrees.
Relief from the cold arrives over the weekend, with Ilta-Sanomat forecasting rising temperatures. On Friday, daytime highs will reach 20–22 degrees in the south and west, 15–19 degrees in the east, and 11–15 degrees in Lapland. Saturday will see a rain system move eastward, potentially bringing thunderstorms, but temperatures will continue to climb. Southern and western Finland could see highs of 20–24 degrees, with isolated areas possibly exceeding the heat threshold of 25 degrees. Eastern Finland will reach 15–22 degrees, while the north will remain cooler at 13–17 degrees.
