Finnish Air Force Hornet to fly over Kaivopuisto during U.S. Embassy Independence Day event

A Finnish Air Force F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet will conduct a flyover over Kaivopuisto on Thursday as part of the U.S. Embassy’s Independence Day celebrations. The aircraft is scheduled to pass over the area at 17:45 at an altitude of approximately 300 meters, flying from southeast to northwest (Ilta-Sanomat).

The overflight is part of a private event organized by the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto, marking the United States’ 250th anniversary. While the country celebrated its Independence Day on 4 July, the embassy’s reception will take place on 13 August (Iltalehti).

Traffic disruptions and security measures

The event will result in temporary traffic restrictions in the area between Market Square and Kaivopuisto, with disruptions expected between 16:00 and 21:00. The Helsinki Police Department has advised travelers, particularly those using the Olympia Terminal, to allow extra time for their journeys (Ilta-Sanomat).

Access to the event area, located between Kaivohuone and Ehrenströmintie, will be restricted to invited guests. Traffic in the vicinity will be directed by the event organizer, with police securing the premises (Iltalehti).

A temporary no-fly zone will be enforced over Kaivopuisto during the event to ensure aviation safety and public security. The restriction applies to drones, except for operators with special permits (Iltalehti).
