Guard Jaeger Regiment holds milestone military oath ceremony at Helsinki Olympic Stadium
The Guard Jaeger Regiment hosted an exceptional military oath and pledge ceremony for its July intake of conscripts on Thursday at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, marking the regiment’s 30th anniversary under its current structure. The event, open to the public, drew attention for its historic venue and symbolic significance.
The ceremony began at noon with the swearing of the military oath, followed by the military pledge and a march-past. The proceedings were overseen by the regiment’s Commander, Colonel Ari Lehmuslehti, while Lieutenant Colonel Vesa Volanen served as the parade commander. The military pledge was read in advance by Jukka-Pekka Ujula, Head of Office for the City of Helsinki, and the oath by Ari Kuokkanen, Director of the Olympic Stadium. The Guard Band provided musical accompaniment throughout the event (Yle).
This year’s ceremony held special significance as the Guard Jaeger Regiment celebrated its 30th anniversary in its present form. The regiment was established in August 1996 through the merger of the Uusimaa Jaeger Battalion and the Guard Battalion, though its traditions and components trace back much further in Finnish military history (Yle).
For the conscripts, the Olympic Stadium provided a memorable setting. Sinea Konst, one of the recruits, described the venue as an incredible place to take the oath, contrasting it with the more typical sand fields used for such ceremonies. "I’ve heard that many conscripts have taken their oath on sand fields, so it’s amazing to get to do it in such a historic place," she told MTV Uutiset. Fellow conscript Daniel Archer highlighted the personal growth and camaraderie he expects from his service, noting that military training offers an opportunity to "develop yourself and see your own limits" (MTV Uutiset).
The event was attended by all conscripts from intake batch 2/26 serving in the Guard Jaeger Regiment, with Yle broadcasting the oath moment live and documenting the preparations in a photo series (Yle).
