Finland Appoints Janne Taalas as New UN Ambassador
Finland has appointed Janne Taalas as the new Head of its Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN), based in New York. Taalas will assume the role in November, succeeding Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs Elina Kalkku, who has led the mission since 2022. The government made the decision during its plenary session on Thursday (Yle).
Taalas, who currently serves as the Managing Director of the peace mediation organization CMI—founded by former President Martti Ahtisaari—has held the position since 2021. His prior diplomatic experience includes roles as Finland’s Ambassador for Cyber Affairs, Ambassador to Rome, and work at the UN Mission in New York (Ilta-Sanomat).
President Alexander Stubb appointed Taalas to the position. The two share a professional connection, as Stubb chaired CMI’s Board from 2018 until 2024, while Taalas took over as CEO in 2021 (Ilta-Sanomat). Following Stubb’s departure, Marko Ahtisaari was elected as the new Chair of CMI. In a press release, Ahtisaari congratulated Taalas, stating: “We are extremely grateful to Janne for his leadership and significant contributions to CMI, and we wish him success in his new position.”
Taalas will be temporarily succeeded at CMI by Deputy CEO Hanna Klinge until a permanent replacement is appointed (Ilta-Sanomat).
