Ministry of Finance launches assessment procedure for Pyhäjärvi due to severe financial deficit
The Ministry of Finance has initiated an assessment procedure with the city of Pyhäjärvi due to its critically deficit-ridden financial situation. MTV Uutiset reports that the decision follows concerns over the city’s ability to meet its statutory obligations.
The procedure will examine whether Pyhäjärvi can independently ensure the continuity of essential services or if further measures, such as a municipal division assessment, are necessary. According to Yle, the city’s per capita deficit exceeds the criteria set by the Ministry of Finance, prompting the intervention.
An evaluation team, consisting of one representative from the city, one from the ministry, and an independent chairperson, will conduct the assessment. Pyhäjärvi, located in North Ostrobothnia, has a population of just under 5,000 residents (Yle). The outcome of the procedure will determine the next steps for the city’s financial recovery.
