Finnish Minister Mika Poutala Undergoes Toe Amputation After Work Accident
Finland’s Minister for Physical Activity, Sport, and Youth, Mika Poutala (Christian Democrats), has undergone surgery to amputate one toe and repair severe injuries to another following a workplace accident on his property. Poutala shared details of the incident and his recovery in an Instagram post.
Ilta-Sanomat (IS) reports that the minister described the extent of his injuries, stating that one toe was fully amputated, while another was left partially non-functional. The surgery also involved repairing severed tendons, securing joints with screws, and closing the wound with a skin graft. Poutala noted that the procedure was lengthy and that he will spend the coming days recovering as a bed patient.
In his post, Poutala expressed gratitude to medical staff and supporters, writing: "Recovery begins now, and we’ll take it one day at a time. Thank you very much to the doctors and nurses for the surgery and good care. And warm thanks to everyone for the encouraging messages and support—they mean a lot!"
The accident occurred last Friday while Poutala was performing earthmoving work on his property. According to MTV Uutiset and IS, he was constructing a jump ramp using a small tractor weighing approximately 1,000 kilograms when the machine began to tip forward. Poutala attempted to jump clear but landed with his left foot trapped between the tractor’s safety cage and the ground.
Poutala, a former Olympic speed skater, has been serving as a minister since June 2023. The incident has raised no immediate concerns about his ability to continue in his role, though his recovery progress remains under observation.
