Foreign national detained in Imatra after unauthorized border crossing from Russia
A foreign national was detained in Imatra on Friday evening after crossing the eastern border from Russia without authorization. The individual, who crossed through terrain, was apprehended near the frontier by the Southeast Finland Border Guard on suspicion of violating Finland’s state border.
The detained person has applied for asylum, according to reports from Yle, MTV Uutiset, and Ilta-Sanomat. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the individual’s identity or nationality, citing ongoing investigations.
Border guard cooperation with Russia
Following the incident, the Southeast Finland Regional Border Commissioner contacted the Russian Regional Border Commissioner for the Vyborg region to address the matter. The Finnish Border Guard continues to investigate the case but has not released additional information at this stage (Ilta-Sanomat, Yle).
