Major House Fire in Oulu Caused by Lightning Strike
A large detached house in Oulu’s Hintankuja area was severely damaged by a fire early Sunday morning after a lightning strike ignited the property. The blaze, which broke out shortly after midnight, has required an extensive firefighting operation.
The rescue department received the emergency call at approximately 12:30 AM and dispatched at least ten units to the scene (Ilta-Sanomat). By early morning, eleven units were still battling the flames, with efforts expected to continue for several more hours (Helsingin Sanomat). Eyewitnesses described the fire as burning with towering flames (Ilta-Sanomat).
According to the rescue department, the fire was caused by a lightning strike that hit a spruce tree next to the house. Burning branches fell onto the terrace, setting garden furniture alight before spreading to the roof structures. The two-story, 200-square-meter house was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries have been reported (Helsingin Sanomat).
The rescue department has confirmed that the property will suffer extensive damage. Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept through Oulu overnight, with the Finnish Meteorological Institute issuing a severe thunderstorm warning for the region at 1:30 AM, valid until 10:00 AM (Helsingin Sanomat).
The severe weather also disrupted internet connections and caused power outages, affecting nearly 700 customers in Oulu at its peak. By 4:00 AM, around 300 customers remained without electricity (Helsingin Sanomat).
