Klaus Törnudd, influential Finnish diplomat and scholar, dies at 94
Klaus Törnudd, a prominent figure in Finnish foreign policy and diplomacy, has died in Helsinki at the age of 94. His family reported the death to the Finnish News Agency (STT) on Monday (Yle; MTV Uutiset).
Törnudd had a distinguished career in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, where he held several key positions. He served as Head of the Political Department and as Under-Secretary of State, playing a significant role in shaping Finland’s international relations (Yle). Additionally, he represented Finland at the United Nations, working at the country’s UN mission in New York on two separate occasions and serving on the UN Security Council (MTV Uutiset).
Beyond his diplomatic work, Törnudd was an academic, holding the position of Professor of International Politics at the University of Tampere from 1967 to 1971 (Yle).
Born in Helsinki on 26 December 1931, Törnudd’s contributions spanned decades, leaving a lasting impact on Finland’s foreign policy and international engagement.
