Nordic Prime Ministers Gather in Copenhagen to Discuss Security and Technology
The Nordic prime ministers will convene in the Copenhagen area on Thursday for their annual summer meeting, with Finland represented by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. The gathering, hosted by Denmark and the Faroe Islands, will focus on key regional priorities, including security, defence, and emerging technologies, as well as the role of Nordic countries in an evolving security landscape.
The agenda also includes discussions on the regulation of technology companies and their impact on children and young people. Yle reports that social psychologist and New York University professor Jonathan Haidt will introduce the segment on technology, providing insights into the societal effects of digital platforms.
In a statement, Prime Minister Orpo emphasised the importance of Nordic cooperation, stating: “The Nordic countries are Finland’s closest partners. The meeting will take place at the Høvelte military base in Birkerød and the Danish Prime Minister’s official residence, Marienborg. The event is organised under Denmark’s presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers, which rotates annually among member states.
Security concerns in the Arctic region, particularly involving Greenland, are expected to feature in discussions. Yle notes that Greenland—a Danish autonomous territory—has gained prominence in security policy debates following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to acquire the island for strategic reasons. Negotiations between Greenland, Denmark, and the United States are ongoing to address these concerns.
