Bear Collision on Juva–Savonlinna Road Results in Cub Being Put Down
A passenger car collided with a bear cub on the Juva–Savonlinna road on Monday evening, August 17, leading to the euthanization of the severely injured animal. The incident occurred around 9:00 PM, according to the Eastern Finland Police Department (MTV Uutiset).
The car sustained minor damage to its front end but was able to continue its journey after the collision. The occupants of the vehicle were unharmed (Iltalehti). The Large Game Emergency Assistance (SRVA) was deployed to track the bear, which was found less than 100 meters from the accident site (Ilta-Sanomat).
The bear, identified as a female cub born this year, was in critical condition and had to be put down. Its carcass will be sent to the Finnish Food Authority for examination (MTV Uutiset). Authorities do not suspect any criminal activity in connection with the incident. The police expressed gratitude to hunters and game management authorities for their assistance in tracking the animal (Iltalehti).
