Groundwater Levels in Eastern Finland Approach Record Lows as Drought Persists
Groundwater levels in Eastern Finland have fallen to critically low levels this summer, with experts warning that the situation may worsen without significant rainfall. The Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) reports that small groundwater formations in the region are currently 40–60 centimeters below the seasonal average, approaching the lowest levels recorded in measurement history. The most affected areas include North Karelia, South Savo, and Päijät-Häme, where the risk of wells drying up is increasing.
Yle highlights that dozens of households in Eastern Finland could soon rely on transported water if groundwater levels continue to decline. The current drought stems from a combination of two consecutive winters with little snow and a dry spring, compounded by an unusually early spring that accelerated groundwater evaporation. In Kainuu, levels have dropped even further, reaching 30–80 centimeters below normal in some areas.
As of now, 20 dried-up wells have been reported in Eastern Finland via Syke’s vesi.fi service, though the actual number is likely higher due to voluntary reporting. Last autumn, 60 dried-up wells were reported in the same region, and experts anticipate a similar trend this year if conditions persist. Iltalehti notes that groundwater levels typically reach their annual low in early autumn, meaning the situation could deteriorate further before winter.
While rainfall has helped restore groundwater levels to seasonal norms in Western Finland, Eastern Finland has seen little relief. In Southern Finland, large groundwater formations remain 20–60 centimeters below average, reflecting the lingering effects of multi-year drought. Hydrologist Sami Soosalu from Syke warns that restoring normal levels will require a rainier autumn and a snowy winter.
Syke’s nationwide monitoring provides an overview of groundwater conditions but does not cover all formations or individual wells. Residents are encouraged to report water shortages via the vesi.fi map service, which supplements official data. The institute also advises well owners to monitor water quality and reduce usage if levels drop, such as by avoiding unnecessary lawn watering.
The prolonged drought has also visibly affected lake and river shorelines, impacting recreational use. Syke continues to track the situation, publishing weekly drought reviews on vesi.fi. Residents are urged to prepare for potential well shortages as the autumn progresses.
