Majority of Finns support banning social media for under-15s
A recent survey reveals that over half of Finns back a proposal to ban social media use for children under the age of 15. According to the poll, conducted by the think tank Toivo, 53 percent of respondents support the measure, while 28 percent oppose it. A further 19 percent were undecided on the issue.
The survey, carried out by Iro Research in April, included 1,000 respondents and was weighted to reflect Finland’s population in terms of age, gender, and region. The margin of error is approximately 3.2 percentage points (MTV Uutiset; Yle).
Party differences in support
Support for the ban varies across political party lines. The highest levels of approval come from supporters of the National Coalition Party and the Finns Party, with 59 percent in favor. Among Green League supporters, 46 percent back the ban, while 45 percent of Left Alliance voters do the same (Yle; MTV Uutiset).
The survey found no significant gender differences in opinions on the issue, with both women and men expressing similar levels of support and opposition (Yle). Toivo, the think tank behind the survey, is closely affiliated with the National Coalition Party.
