Oil Spill in Linnansaari National Park: Human Error Confirmed, Shoreline Cleanup Expands as Saimaa Ringed Seal Habitat Threatened

An oil spill has occurred near Linnansaari National Park in Rantasalmi, affecting Lake Saimaa and partially spreading into a protected nature conservation area. The incident was caused by a technical fault in the commercial vessel Nina, owned by Mopro Oy, according to authorities, and has now been confirmed to have impacted one of the Saimaa ringed seal’s most important distribution areas (MTV Uutiset). Helsingin Sanomat reports that the spill was the result of a detached hose during refueling of the vessel’s lubricating oil tank, which allowed oil to flow onto the deck and into the waterway while left unattended for approximately ten minutes (Helsingin Sanomat).
