Young Adult Falls Asleep While Cooking in Joensuu Apartment
A young adult fell asleep while cooking in an apartment on Koulukatu in Joensuu early Tuesday morning, leading to smoke spreading into the building’s stairwell and triggering the fire alarm. The incident prompted concerns from other residents, who called the emergency number 112.
The North Karelia Rescue Department responded to the alarm at 5:32 AM, with units from Joensuu and Pekkala arriving at the scene. Rescue team leader Keijo Leppänen stated that the resident was surprised when responders woke them (Iltalehti). Upon arrival, the rescue department turned off the oven and mechanically ventilated the apartment.
No damage was reported as a result of the incident, according to the rescue department (Iltalehti). Both Ilta-Sanomat and Iltalehti confirm that smoke had entered the stairwell, prompting the emergency call. The resident was unharmed.
