Finnish-Russian dual citizen charged with aggravated human trafficking over ISIS-linked case, faces up to 10 years in prison
The Finnish Prosecution Service has filed charges against a 45-year-old woman for two counts of aggravated human trafficking, alleging she took her underage children to areas controlled by the extremist group ISIS in Syria in 2014. Helsingin Sanomat and Iltalehti report that the suspected offenses occurred over two periods: 2014–2021 and 2014–2024, during which the children were exposed to conditions violating human dignity in a conflict zone. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) states the children were subjected to "a life in which a child’s right to a safe growth environment is not fulfilled" (Iltalehti), while Detective Chief Inspector Jan Aarnisalo specified that their "rights to a safe upbringing could not be met" during the investigation (Euronews). Yle reports that if convicted, the woman could face a maximum prison sentence of up to 10 years for aggravated human trafficking (Yle).
