North Korea Launches Suspected Ballistic Missile Amid US-South Korea Military Exercises
North Korea has launched a projectile suspected to be a ballistic missile, according to reports from Japan and South Korea. The South Korean armed forces confirmed the detection of at least one unidentified projectile, while Japan’s Prime Minister’s office stated on social media platform X that the object is believed to be a ballistic missile (Yle; MTV Uutiset).
The launch occurs during ongoing joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea in the region. The drills, which have drawn criticism from North Korea in the past, are scheduled to conclude as early as tomorrow at the request of U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump has cited his positive relations with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as the reason for shortening the exercises, expressing plans to meet Kim later this year (Yle).
