SDP remembers Eemeli Peltonen one year after his death in Parliament House
One year has passed since the death of Social Democratic Party (SDP) Member of Parliament Eemeli Peltonen, who died by suicide in Parliament House on 19 August 2025. The 30-year-old first-term MP from Järvenpää was remembered by SDP Chair Antti Lindtman in a social media post published late Wednesday evening.
Lindtman described Peltonen as a young, talented, and reliable colleague whose work was driven by a commitment to Finland, his hometown, and the SDP movement. "Grief stopped our entire movement at the time. It is still difficult to understand, let alone accept, that we will no longer encounter Eemeli’s smile and calm demeanor next week at the summer meeting or in the corridors of Parliament," Lindtman wrote on Instagram (Ilta-Sanomat, MTV Uutiset).
Peltonen was characterized as polite, bright, and sharp, with a selfless approach to his work. "He never demanded anything for himself but did everything for Finland, his hometown Järvenpää, and our movement. That is how we remember him: as a person who was genuinely interested in others and whose work was guided by the desire to build a more just Finland," Lindtman stated (Ilta-Sanomat).
In his post, Lindtman referenced a quote by Väinö Tanner, which he said perfectly encapsulated Peltonen’s character: "I accept the majority’s position, even if I have fought against it, and I will work to secure its victory." The same words concluded Peltonen’s memorial text at the time of his death (MTV Uutiset).
Peltonen’s death shocked Finland, and his spouse Sofia later shared in an interview with MTV Uutiset last autumn how his mental health deteriorated rapidly over the course of one summer.
