Threats Reported at Two Finnish Vocational Colleges
Two separate incidents involving threats at vocational colleges in Finland were reported this week, prompting police responses and precautionary measures.
Saarijärvi Campus Lockdown After Student Threats
The Northern Central Finland Vocational College in Saarijärvi took swift action on Wednesday after an adult student made threats toward students and staff. Helsingin Sanomat reports that college staff received an alert about the situation shortly before 1 p.m., prompting an immediate investigation.
"Based on information provided by other students, we immediately began investigating the matter. During the discussion, the student also made threats toward staff," said Director of Education Pekka Janhonen in a press release.
As a precaution, campus doors were locked, and students and staff were directed to indoor areas. Those living in the dormitory were instructed not to allow outsiders inside. The student was removed from the premises, and police were notified of the threats. A police operation was later initiated when the student was observed returning toward the college, leading to a second call to authorities.
The situation was resolved safely by the afternoon, with the college confirming that teaching continued normally throughout and after the incident. "There was no actual threat in the situation, but we wanted to act in accordance with safety guidelines in case a threatening situation had arisen," Janhonen added. No injuries were reported, and the atmosphere at the school remained calm.
Hämeenlinna Incident Leads to Police Detention
On Thursday afternoon, Häme Police responded to a report of a possible school threat at Hämeenlinna Vocational College Tavastia. MTV Uutiset reports that a student had verbally threatened another student, though police stated that no other individuals at the institution were at risk.
Officers arrived within minutes and detained the suspect without incident. No weapons or objects suitable for violence were found in the student’s possession. The individual is now suspected of unlawful threat, and police investigations are ongoing.
Authorities confirmed that it is safe to attend the institution as usual on Friday.
