Tampere Ends Hopealinjat Operations After Years of Financial Struggles
The City of Tampere has decided to discontinue the operations of Suomen Hopealinja Oy, the largest inland waterway shipping company in the Nordic countries, following years of financial difficulties. The company, fully owned by the city, will cease its services on 30 September, with operations fully wound down by the end of the year.
Hopealinjat, which provides inland waterway cruises in Pirkanmaa and Kanta-Häme, has struggled to achieve profitability despite the city’s long-standing efforts to sell the company. Yle reports that the decision to terminate operations was made after no financially sustainable solution could be found. Matti Helimo (NCP), Chair of the City Board’s Corporate Division, stated in a press release that the closure aligns with the city’s overall interests and responsible financial management.
Asko Koskinen, Chair of Hopealinjat’s Board, confirmed to Yle that permanent staff will be laid off in stages due to the cessation of operations. The company had previously been the subject of sale negotiations, with MTV reporting on the city’s plans as early as winter 2025 (Iltalehti).
Uncertainty Over Key Assets
The future of Hopealinjat’s operations and assets remains unclear. Koskinen told Yle that efforts are underway to secure continued services to Viikinsaari, potentially under a private operator. However, he did not comment on the fate of the historic steamship Tarjanne, which is owned by Runoilijan tie Oy. The vessel has been operated under an administration agreement with Hopealinjat, which will expire when the company ceases operations.
