Two boating incidents occurred in Finland on Friday, resulting in one capsized rowboat in Laukaa and another stranded inflatable boat in Oulu. Neither incident led to serious injuries, though both highlight the importance of safety precautions on the water.
Rowboat Capsizes in Laukaa During Livestream
In Laukaa, two adults ended up in the water after their rowboat capsized at Luulu Bay around 18:30. According to the Central Finland Rescue Department, bystanders arrived at the scene before rescue services and managed to bring the individuals ashore using the overturned boat. Surface rescue personnel ensured the landing proceeded safely.
The emergency call was made by viewers of a livestream after they witnessed the accident. Ilta-Sanomat reports that the boaters had been broadcasting live on the Kick streaming platform when the boat capsized. On-duty fire master Minna Riipinen confirmed that one of the boaters was wearing a life jacket. Emergency medical services were still examining the individuals at 19:00, and the cause of the accident is under investigation.
Inflatable Boat Stranded in Oulu
In Oulu, the North Ostrobothnia Rescue Department responded to an alert at 00:45 regarding two people stranded in an inflatable rubber boat. The pair had set out to circle an island but lost one of their oars, leaving them unable to return to shore due to the current. They clung to roots along the shore of a small island until rescue services located them with a water scooter and towed them to safety. MTV Uutiset reports that neither individual fell into the water, and no injuries were reported.
The rescue department emphasized the importance of safety measures, including wearing life jackets, ensuring proper lighting, using vessels suitable for sea conditions, and being prepared for unexpected situations.
