Wildfires Spread Across Finland as Dry Conditions Persist
Finnish rescue services have responded to dozens of wildfire alerts across the country on May Day, with incidents reported in multiple regions. According to the Emergency Response Centre Agency, wildfires have broken out in at least 18 locations, including Hyvinkää, Lappeenranta, Kajaani, Isojoki, Espoo, Helsinki, Jyväskylä, Tampere, Nivala, Iisalmi, Alavus, Lapua, Riihimäki, Haapavesi, Lieksa, Nurmijärvi, Nurmes, and Kontiolahti (Ilta-Sanomat).
A wildfire warning remains in effect for much of Finland, with dry conditions expected to worsen over the weekend. Ilta-Sanomat reports that the warning applies to most of the country on Saturday, excluding Kymenlaakso, South Karelia, and South Savo. Southern Lapland is also at risk, with forecasts indicating no immediate relief from the dry weather.
Human Activity Behind Several Fires
Several wildfires have been linked to human actions. In Riihimäki, one fire started when an ashtray was emptied onto brushwood, while another was caused by children playing with matches (MTV Uutiset). Similarly, a fire in Oulu was attributed to a child’s careless handling of fire.
Rain Expected to Ease Conditions Next Week
Meteorologist Joonas Koskela from Foreca states that rain is forecast to arrive early next week, beginning in the south on Monday and gradually moving northward. While the exact timing remains uncertain, the precipitation is expected to alleviate the wildfire risk in affected areas (Ilta-Sanomat).
