Finland Investigates Suspected Drone Airspace Violation Amid Ukrainian Strikes on Russian Port

Finnish authorities are examining a suspected violation of Finland’s airspace by an unmanned drone in the Virolahti area near the Russian border. The Ministry of Defence confirmed in a press release that the Air Force detected the drone early on Sunday morning, flying toward Russia. Neither the model nor the origin of the drone has been identified (Helsingin Sanomat).

The Finnish Defence Forces later stated that the drone was no longer in Finnish airspace, though they did not confirm reports of unusual air traffic in the region (Yle). A Yle reporter in Tammio Island, part of the Hamina archipelago, reported hearing multiple fighter jet flights and two loud booms between 4:00 AM and 5:30 AM. The first explosion was described as particularly strong, shaking cottage windows, though the Defence Forces have not verified the cause of the sounds (Yle).

The suspected airspace violation follows a series of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russia’s Primorsk oil port in the Leningrad Region, approximately 50 kilometres from the Finnish border. The region’s governor, Alexander Drozdenko, reported on Telegram that the strikes may have caused a fire at the port, though Reuters cited Russian sources stating no oil spills occurred (Helsingin Sanomat). Russian media outlet Fontanka reported that air defences intercepted around 60 drones, while Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed a total of 334 Ukrainian drones were shot down across 16 regions overnight (Yle).

Similar drone activity has been observed in neighbouring Baltic states. Estonia’s Defence Forces issued warnings to residents in Võru and Ida-Viru counties, advising them to take shelter if drones were sighted (Yle). Earlier this year, Ukrainian drones strayed into Finnish airspace in March and April, as well as into Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia (Helsingin Sanomat).

The Primorsk port, located in the St. Petersburg economic zone, is a key facility for crude oil storage and has been a frequent target of Ukrainian strikes during the war (Helsingin Sanomat).
