Fatal Car Accident in Kokkola Claims Life of 70-Year-Old Driver
A 70-year-old man died in a single-vehicle accident in Kokkola on Wednesday afternoon after his car veered off the road and collided with a tree and a storage building. The incident occurred on Kajaani Road, approximately half a kilometre from Highway 8 in the direction of Kälviä.
The Central Finland Police Department reports that the accident was first noticed by a bystander, who alerted authorities at 1:30 PM (Iltalehti). However, Ilta-Sanomat and Iltalehti later clarified that the emergency centre received the report at 3:12 PM. There were no eyewitnesses to the moment the car left the road.
According to police, the vehicle first struck a tree before colliding with the wall of a storage building. The driver, who was alone in the car, was resuscitated at the scene by bystanders but succumbed to his injuries (Iltalehti). The Central Ostrobothnia Police Department preliminarily suspects that the man suffered a medical incident, which may have caused the car to veer across the opposite lane into a field (Ilta-Sanomat).
Authorities are investigating the exact sequence of events and the cause of the road departure. The Accident Investigation Board has also been involved in the probe (Ilta-Sanomat). No further details about the victim or the circumstances have been released at this time.
