Government proposes reducing electoral district range to 9–15
The Finnish government has put forward a draft proposal to amend the constitution, reducing the minimum and maximum number of electoral districts from the current 12–18 to 9–15. The Ministry of Justice is now seeking statements on the proposal, with submissions accepted until August 12.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the change would not automatically alter the existing division of electoral districts but would allow for future mergers without requiring the division of another district (Yle). The reform aims to improve the proportionality of the electoral system across the country (MTV Uutiset).
Amending the constitution requires approval from both the current and the next Parliament, with the latter needing a two-thirds majority to pass the change (Yle). The proposal is part of broader efforts to streamline electoral processes while maintaining fairness in representation.
