Intoxicated Drivers Responsible for Over a Third of Finland’s Fatal Traffic Accidents in Past Decade
Finland’s Accident Investigation Institute has found that intoxicated drivers were responsible for 37 percent of all fatal traffic accidents in the country over the past ten years. The data highlights the persistent role of alcohol and other intoxicants in road fatalities, with particularly severe consequences for vulnerable road users.
According to the institute, drivers under the influence caused 15 fatal accidents involving pedestrians, cyclists, or individuals using light electric vehicles (Yle). Among the intoxicated drivers involved in these incidents, half were solely under the influence of alcohol, while roughly a quarter had combined alcohol with other intoxicants (MTV Uutiset).
The findings underscore the risks posed by impaired driving, which remains a leading cause of preventable road deaths in Finland. Both Yle and MTV Uutiset report that the data covers a decade-long period, providing a comprehensive overview of the issue.
