Police Stop Unsafe Scooter-Sofa Hybrid in Kaarina
Police in Kaarina, Southwest Finland, have intercepted a highly unusual vehicle—a hybrid constructed from an electric scooter and a sofa—after it was spotted traveling on public roads. The vehicle, which occupied the full width of a light traffic lane, was deemed a hazard to traffic safety.
The Southwest Finland Police Department shared details of the incident on Facebook, accompanied by a photo of the makeshift contraption. According to police, the vehicle was carrying at least one passenger at the time of the stop. The driver, described as a young person under the age of 18, had built the vehicle themselves, though authorities did not provide further specifics on the case due to the driver’s age (Yle).
This is not the first time such a vehicle has been reported in the area. Iltalehti reports that police received a similar complaint as early as last October, when a driver—also with a passenger—was seen riding a comparable scooter-sofa hybrid on a light traffic path. On that occasion, police were unable to stop the vehicle before it disappeared.
Safety Risks and Legal Consequences
Authorities have warned that such homemade vehicles pose significant risks. "Build, innovate, and develop your creativity and craftsmanship, but remember that safety—both your own and others’—must always come first in traffic," the Southwest Finland Police stated in their social media post. They emphasized that the vehicle in question did not meet any safety requirements and could endanger the driver, passengers, and other road users, even at low speeds.
Under Finnish traffic regulations, vehicles used on public roads must comply with safety standards and be suitable for traffic. The Road Traffic Act specifies that the maximum width for a multi-wheeled bicycle is 1.25 meters, a limit the scooter-sofa hybrid clearly exceeded. Yle notes that operating an unregulated vehicle may result in fines, including penalties for endangering traffic safety. Katri Tammio, communications specialist for the Southwest Finland Police, told Yle that transporting oversized or uncontrollable items on an electric scooter could also lead to fines.
The incident serves as a reminder that while creativity in vehicle design is not prohibited, all modifications must adhere to traffic laws to ensure public safety.
