Government proposes expanded police powers to intervene in drone flights

The Finnish government has submitted a draft proposal to grant police the authority to use force, including firearms, to intervene in drone operations. The proposal has now entered a consultation round, during which experts will provide input on the planned legislative changes.

Under the proposed amendments, police would be permitted to shoot down drones or other unmanned aerial vehicles if deemed necessary. Yle reports that the changes aim to enhance law enforcement’s ability to respond to potential security threats posed by drones.

The Ministry of the Interior states that the proposal seeks to align police powers with the evolving security landscape, advancements in drone technology, and emerging risks associated with unmanned aerial systems. MTV Uutiset highlights that the draft would also expand the Defence Forces’ capacity to assist authorities in intercepting drones and other unmanned devices.

The consultation process will assess the proposal before any potential implementation.
