The Finnish Border Guard is investigating a suspected case of aggravated extortion involving an individual described as an "education agent" and their associates. The probe focuses on the period between 2022 and 2025, during which approximately 350 Myanmar nationals were allegedly brought to Finland under the pretext of studying in upper secondary educational institutions across the country.

According to the Border Guard, the suspects may have charged the students excessive fees for arranging study placements, residence permits, and language tests. Ilta-Sanomat reports that many of the victims have been left in significant debt to the organizers, leaving them in a vulnerable position in Finland.

The Border Guard’s Crime Prevention Unit of the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard District is leading the preliminary investigation. Potential victims or individuals with relevant information are urged to contact authorities via email at vihjeet.slmv@raja.fi or through WhatsApp at +358 50 331 1893 (Ilta-Sanomat).

MTV Uutiset confirms that the investigation includes charges of aggravated extortion, with the Border Guard actively seeking reports from affected Myanmar students. The case highlights concerns over exploitation in Finland’s international education sector.
