President Alexander Stubb was conferred as an honorary doctor of sports sciences at the University of Jyväskylä in absentia on Saturday. The university awarded the title to eleven individuals recognised for their societal influence and contributions to science and research, including Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission (Yle).

The conferment ceremony also celebrated 80 master’s graduates and 117 doctoral graduates, marking a significant academic milestone for the institution (MTV Uutiset; Yle). The procession, held between approximately 14:15 and 15:00, temporarily affected traffic on Kauppakatu in Jyväskylä (MTV Uutiset).

This is not Stubb’s first honorary doctorate. On Friday, he was conferred as an honorary doctor of the School of Business, also in absentia (Yle; MTV Uutiset). His previous accolades include honorary doctorates from the University of the Arts, the University of Vaasa, Lappeenranta University of Technology, and Furman University in the United States, where he studied in the 1990s (MTV Uutiset; Yle).

The title of honorary doctor is the highest recognition a university can bestow (Yle).
