School Violence in Finland Reaches Record High with Over 6,500 Crime Reports Annually, Minister Calls Situation "Unbearable" as Youth Violence Surges Nationwide
Violence against teachers and staff in Finnish schools has risen, with Espoo’s Basic Education Director Juha Nurmi attributing the trend partly to an increase in students requiring intensive support. Nurmi, speaking to Helsingin Sanomat, noted that the majority of violent incidents involve students with disabilities or illnesses that impair self-regulation (Ilta-Sanomat, Iltalehti). Minister of Education Anders Adlercreutz has described the situation as "unbearable" and "intolerable," emphasizing that such conditions are unacceptable in any workplace and linking the issue to broader societal challenges, including discipline and upbringing (MTV Uutiset). Adlercreutz, a father of five, stated that if behavioral issues are not addressed at home, they become difficult to manage in schools (MTV Uutiset).
