Finnish Member of Parliament Jarno Limnéll (National Coalition Party) was assaulted and robbed in Santiago, Chile, on Sunday. Limnéll reported that two necklaces and a bracelet were stolen during the incident, describing the experience as deeply unsettling.

"I must say that my heart has been pounding quite a bit since then, when I’ve gone through this incident in my mind. It was frightening when someone suddenly violated my physical integrity like that," Limnéll told Ilta-Sanomat (IS). He had earlier shared details of the violent encounter on Facebook.

The Finnish Embassy in Santiago is aware of the incident but has declined to comment further, citing privacy concerns. Esa Vallioniemi, Consular Services and Administrative Officer at the embassy, confirmed that pickpocketing and armed robberies are common in Chile, affecting both tourists and locals.

"We recommend exercising general caution," Vallioniemi said, noting that thefts often occur in situations where victims are distracted, such as when taking photos. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs’ travel advisory for Chile advises keeping valuables, passports, and credit cards in secure locations like hotel safes.

While Chile is considered one of the safer countries in South America, Vallioniemi acknowledged that robberies can happen anywhere in Santiago. "It is truly unfortunate that such things occur. In the worst case, this can ruin an entire trip," he said, adding that thieves do not discriminate between locals and tourists.

Vallioniemi also advised Finnish travelers to register their travel plans, obtain travel insurance, and review official travel advisories. "In the event of a travel-related incident, travel insurance goes a long way," he said (Iltalehti).
