Valio has announced plans to discontinue production at its Oulu factory, with operations set to cease by mid-2028. The company will gradually transfer production to its facilities in Riihimäki, Jyväskylä, and Joensuu over the coming years, according to Yle.

The Oulu factory currently employs around 300 people, of whom approximately 140 are expected to be laid off in stages as the relocation progresses (Helsingin Sanomat). The remaining functions at the site will include a distribution warehouse, sales, and support operations.

The factory produces fresh dairy products such as milk and sour milk, as well as plant-based semi-finished products (Yle). Valio has assured that product deliveries to customers will continue without disruption (Helsingin Sanomat).

In a statement, Valio cited the need to improve production efficiency, profitability, and competitiveness as the primary reasons for the closure. The company also emphasized that the move aims to secure the vitality of Finnish dairy farms and the continuity of domestic food production (Yle).

Valio employs around 4,000 people across Finland (Helsingin Sanomat). The Oulu factory’s closure is part of a broader restructuring effort to optimize operations.
