Finland to Acquire GBU-53 Small Diameter Bomb II Glide Bombs for F-35 Fleet
Finland’s Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (National Coalition Party) has authorised the Defence Forces to procure GBU-53 Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) glide bombs from the United States, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed. The weapons are designed for use in Finland’s F-35 multirole fighters, enhancing the fleet’s air-to-surface capabilities.
The SDB II glide bombs are described as technologically advanced, enabling precise engagement from medium range, including against moving ground targets in challenging weather conditions. Their compact size allows multiple bombs to be carried simultaneously on a single fighter, increasing operational flexibility. Iltalehti and Ilta-Sanomat both highlight the bomb’s versatility, citing the Ministry of Defence’s press release, which states that the acquisition will strengthen Finland’s defence capacity in demanding conditions.
Häkkänen emphasised the significance of the procurement, stating that the glide bombs represent a new level of capability that supports the effective utilisation of the F-35 fleet within Finland’s defence system. The acquisition supplements a previously placed order under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement concluded in 2023, as part of the broader F-35 procurement programme (Iltalehti).
The United States Congress granted export approval for the SDB II glide bombs in connection with Finland’s HX fighter procurement programme. The bombs are manufactured by Raytheon, though the Ministry of Defence has not disclosed the financial details of the acquisition (Ilta-Sanomat).
