Feces-Smeared Swastika Found on Playground Slide in Tampere
A disturbing act of vandalism was discovered at a children’s playground in Tampere on Midsummer’s Eve, when a mother found a slide defaced with feces arranged in the shape of a swastika. The incident occurred at Pättiniemi Playground in the Hyhky district, shocking both the family and the local community.
The 40-year-old mother had taken her two children—a four-year-old and a one-year-old—to the playground on Friday morning. While the younger child played in the sandbox, the four-year-old approached the slide and called out in alarm, asking what the brown substance on it was. Upon closer inspection, the mother saw that the slide’s railings and surface had been smeared with feces, with a large swastika clearly visible (MTV Uutiset).
"I was completely speechless and couldn’t explain the situation to my child," the mother told Ilta-Sanomat. "I just said it was some kind of joke. A playground should be a neutral and safe place for children." She described feeling both disgust and disbelief, particularly because the act targeted a space meant for young children. The feces appeared dried, suggesting the vandalism had occurred sometime between Thursday night and early Friday morning.
Unable to clean the slide herself, the mother reported the incident to the City of Tampere but expressed doubt that it would be addressed in time for Midsummer celebrations. "It’s frustrating because other children will definitely go there," she said. The family left the playground, and the mother later took her child to another park before promising a trip to the beach and ice cream to lift their spirits (Ilta-Sanomat).
The mother, originally from Italy, said she was especially shocked by the incident occurring in Finland. "I would never have thought that something like this could happen in Tampere or in Finland," she told Ilta-Sanomat. She shared a photo of the vandalism in the Tampere Puskaradio Facebook group to warn other families, hoping the perpetrator would reflect on the harm caused to children.
The motive behind the act remains unclear, but the use of a swastika—a symbol universally associated with hate—has intensified concerns about the nature of the vandalism. Authorities have not yet commented on the investigation.
