Finland Investigates Suspected Drone Violations Near Russian Border
Finnish authorities are investigating two suspected violations of the country’s airspace by drones in the early hours of Sunday morning. The incidents occurred in Virolahti, near the eastern border, and in the maritime area off Ulko-Tammio, southeast of Hamina, according to the Border Guard (Iltalehti).
The Ministry of Defence initially reported that one drone had flown over Virolahti toward Russia, though its origin and model remain unidentified. Iltalehti’s military affairs expert Emil Kastehelmi assessed that the drone was most likely Ukrainian. The Border Guard confirmed that both drones had exited Finnish airspace by the time of reporting.
Residents React to Unusual Activity
Residents of Virolahti, a municipality in Kymenlaakso, described waking to loud noises during the night. Kaija Saarainen, who lives in the village of Ravijoki, said she heard a fighter jet and a helicopter overhead but was not alarmed, as military activity has become common in the area. "It doesn’t evoke fear at all," she told Yle.
Alpo Tani, a cottage owner from Espoo with a property on Santio Island, reported hearing an explosion around 3:30 AM. "It sounded a bit like when thunder strikes nearby, so that the windows properly rattled," he said. While acknowledging the unsettling nature of the events, Tani noted that locals have grown accustomed to such disturbances. "It doesn’t feel nice, but this is the life we live now. Unpleasant things come close."
Emilia Harjunen, another resident, said she was not surprised by news of the drone sightings, having heard unusual sounds during the night. "It is certainly a bit strange how something like this can happen," she remarked. Matti Mäkelä echoed the sentiment, stating that military activity in Virolahti has become "more normal than abnormal" (Yle).
Ukraine’s Drone Strike Near Finnish Border
The incidents in Finland coincided with a Ukrainian drone strike on the Primorsk (Koivisto) oil port in Russia, located approximately 50 kilometers from the Finnish border. Ukraine confirmed the attack, which took place during the same night (Yle, Iltalehti).
Authorities continue to investigate the drone violations, though no immediate threats to public safety have been reported.
