A traffic accident on Sunday evening caused significant disruptions in Helsinki’s Kalasatama district after a passenger car collided with a light pole, bringing down tram overhead wires and forcing the closure of Hermannin rantatie.

The incident occurred at approximately 17:00 near the Redi shopping centre, according to police reports. Ilta-Sanomat published images from the scene showing a severely damaged car next to a pole that had fallen completely to the ground.

Police confirmed that the driver of the passenger car was the sole occupant and may have been injured in the collision. Iltalehti reports that there is currently no information about other possible injuries or potential criminal charges related to the accident.

As a result of the collision, the overhead wires for tram traffic were brought down, leading to the cancellation of departures for tram line 13. The Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) estimates that the disruption will last until approximately 23:30 (Yle). Traffic on Hermannin rantatie has been closed until further notice, with police and rescue services on site directing traffic and investigating the situation.

The Helsinki Rescue Department and police are both present at the scene, as confirmed by multiple sources (Yle, Iltalehti). The accident is under investigation, and no further details about the cause or extent of the damage have been released.
