Green District Heating Water Leaks onto Streets in Turku

A rupture in Turku’s district heating network has caused green, warm water to flood streets near the intersection of Tukholmankatu and Ruissalontie in Kirstinpuisto. The leak was first reported around 16:30 on Sunday, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.

Ilta-Sanomat (IS) reports that steam from the leaking water has reduced visibility in the area, with green water spreading along the edge of Ruissalontie. A video shared by an IS reader shows the extent of the spill, which has already flowed a significant distance. A wheel loader was observed at the site, though its role in the response remains unclear.

According to Southwest Finland Emergency Services’ on-duty fire chief, Miikka Jylhä (Iltalehti), the water originates from the district heating network and is leaking from two separate locations. Emergency crews have cordoned off the area, particularly in the initial phase when the leak was more intense and vaporization further obstructed visibility. Iltalehti adds that part of Ruissalontie has been closed to traffic as a precaution.

Rescue units from the Southwest Finland Rescue Department were dispatched shortly after the alarm, with two units arriving on scene. While the leak has since lessened, water continues to seep onto the ground. Emergency services are awaiting the energy company’s intervention to shut off the affected valves and halt the flow.
