A growing number of Finnish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) support moving the summer holiday period to August, according to a recent poll, as the government nears a decision on the potential reform. The proposal, which would align Finland’s school holidays with those of many other European countries, has sparked debate among businesses, unions, and political parties.

Strong Business Support for August Holidays

Nearly half of SMEs surveyed in the Entrepreneur Poll by the Finnish Entrepreneurs back the shift, with support particularly high in the retail, industrial, and expert services sectors. Only the construction sector showed below-average enthusiasm. Regionally, entrepreneurs in the Greater Helsinki area and Eastern Finland were the most supportive, while about one-third of respondents opposed the change, and a quarter remained undecided (Yle).

The Finnish Entrepreneurs argue that moving holidays to August could extend the high season for businesses and improve workforce availability, as many summer workers return to studies in August. Mikael Pentikäinen, CEO of the Finnish Entrepreneurs, stated that the change would bring Finland in line with other European countries where August is a peak holiday month (Yle).

Sanna Lempiäinen, an expert at the Finnish Entrepreneurs, added that the shift could ease the daily lives of working parents by allowing more flexible holiday scheduling between July and August (Yle).

Government Investigation Nears Completion

Education Minister Anders Adlercreutz (Swedish People’s Party) told MTV News that the government’s preliminary investigation into shifting summer holidays is nearly finished. A proposed model is being circulated for statements from stakeholders, with feedback expected to be gathered by late summer.

Adlercreutz expressed hope that the current government could make a decision on the reform, though its progress remains uncertain due to a lack of consensus in the government programme. A legislative proposal could be prepared during this term if political agreement is reached (MTV Uutiset).

The minister highlighted potential benefits for families, noting that international organisations already follow global holiday rhythms. Aligning school holidays with August would make it easier for parents to coordinate time off with their children’s breaks (MTV Uutiset).

Political and Union Opposition

While the Centre Party, Swedish People’s Party (RKP), and Movement Now have supported the idea, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Finland’s largest opposition party, has opposed it. The Trade Union of Education (OAJ) has also rejected the proposal (Yle).

No timeline has been set for the completion of the investigation, but the Finnish Entrepreneurs have urged swift action, stating that the reform could improve workforce availability and family logistics (Yle).
