Motorboat Sinks Near Kotka, One Person Found Dead
Rescue operations concluded on Thursday after a motorboat sank northeast of Kuutsalo in Kotka, resulting in one fatality. The incident occurred near Vassaari, where authorities were alerted shortly before 3:00 PM.
The boat, a medium-sized covered motorboat approximately six to seven meters long, had two people on board at the time of the accident. One person was rescued and taken to hospital for further treatment, with the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard confirming the individual was not in mortal danger (Ilta-Sanomat). The second person was later found deceased inside the sunken vessel, as reported by the Coast Guard on X after 6:00 PM (Ilta-Sanomat).
The search and rescue effort involved multiple authorities. According to Ilta-Sanomat, the operation included two Coast Guard units, divers, a search and rescue helicopter from the Air Patrol Squadron, three units from the Kymenlaakso Rescue Department, and a boat from the Kymenlaakso Police Department. Emergency medical services were also present at the scene.
The weather at the time of the accident was described as typical for the area (Ilta-Sanomat). The Southeast Finland Police are investigating the cause of the incident but have not released further details at this stage. Yle reports that the Maritime Rescue Center led the ongoing operations until the search concluded.
